VDR provides enterprises with the industry leading Continuous Data Protection (CDP) solution, ensuring that mission-critical data and applications are always protected. Increasingly, organisations are relying on important business applications to be operational at all times and disruptions can prove costly in terms of productivity and financial loss. In the past, organisations relied on traditional backups/snapshots as the basis for their data protection - this approach alone is inadequate and susceptible to data loss that can occur between backups. VDR brings business continuity to a whole new level, delivering a single solution for both continuous local backup and remote disaster recovery in a simple and cost-effective manner. VDR is an extremely robust and flexible continuous data replication solution, enabling automated and reliable recovery of mission-critical data and applications at both the data centre and remote branch offices. Whether you are concerned about email, key business applications such as ERP, databases, or unstructured files, VDR provides both local and remote high-performance continuous data protection based on CDP technology. VDR has raised the bar in enabling not just point in time restoration but also event-based restorations. VDR allows organisations to tag "event" bookmarks and use them for fast recovery and failover point selection. Unlike other vendors who simply time-stamp each block to enable restoration to a given point in time, VDR actually understands the application state allowing for application consistent restorations. This critical difference allows organisations to restore back to a given event or a given point in time and be assured that the application will come up correctly. The image below depicts the importance of choosing the appropriate disaster recovery technology based on careful consideration of the desired Recovery Point Objectives (RPO) and Recovery Time Objectives (RTO); VDR's CDP-based solution allows for the optimal RPO/RTO mix.
VDR in Action - How it WorksUsing data taps, data is granularly collected from servers as it is created and sent to a local VDR CX server, which can then store the data locally and/or remotely (using replication). If bi-directional and/or one button application failover is desired at the remote site, an optional second CX would be deployed there. Note that in Vortex's unique architecture, data is replicated between servers, not between appliances or storage arrays.
VDR is designed for efficient, highly-scalable data protection in the most demanding environments. VDR agents reside on the host Application Servers and/or database servers and enable volume-level continuous data protection and scheduled file-level protection respectively. Each lightweight agent installs seamlessly and occupies a very small footprint on the host. The agents streamline the data replication process by only moving block-level differences based on real time data changes. Furthermore, unlike many storage vendor approaches, VDR works in virtually any heterogeneous storage environment resulting in dramatic cost savings. VDR CX is the Control Server that provides centralised management and host offload of CPU- intensive operations necessary for efficient data protection. It also includes the VDR-Scout Analyser to help IT staff accurately analyze and provision secondary storage and bandwidth. The diagram above depicts a typical VDR deployment in an enterprise data centre. This solution provides for continuous local backup and rapid "operational" restore capabilities at the local level protecting against logical errors/data corruption related issues, and for remote replication and Disaster Recovery at a remote site. VDR CX employs various bandwidth optimization techniques to limit the impact on scarce network resources. In conclusion, VDR product suite brings business continuity to a whole new level. Organisations can feel confident knowing that their core business applications and data will have unparalleled availability with the industry leading CDP solution. Furthermore, in addition to providing one of the most flexible CDP architectures available, VDR offers an extensive suite of application aware solutions to meet the broader needs of any organisation such as Exchange, SQL, Oracle, SAP and SharePoint. When it comes to protecting your data, DR-Scout is the only solution that provides a cost effective, easy to manage CDP solution throughout the entire data centre.
